Salt & Crust – Batley

LO AND BEHOLD! There has been a massive change in the small village of the Batley scenery recently. GODFATHERS PIZZERIA IS NO MORE! They have rebranded into Salt and Crust Smokehouse and Dinner. Salt and Crust still has all of your favourites & is HMC Certified & alcohol-free Alhamdulillah. I recently visited here with the family to get the low down of what changes they have made to the restaurant and the food of course.

However, upon seeing the menu, we noticed that it was almost the same as Godfathers hence they have stuck to what they know for the interim but will be gradually adding to the menu as time goes on. Look out for the Menu below. Don’t worry, when the new options are added, we will update this post.

The Place

Salt and Crust have transformed the decor and atmosphere which has honestly given a huge improvement to the ambience and vibe of the restaurant. It carries a modern style with a well-needed touch of colour and various types of lighting throughout the restaurant so don’t worry you can get that selfie.

Interior

The new chairs give that needed comfort to enjoy your meal & have made a big difference in adding a pop of colour which really does brightens everything.

Neon signs have been added along the walls to light things up and give a retro diner vibe. They have also been placed above the open plan kitchen area to make it a central focus which they have pulled it off really well! It’s brighter, colourful and makes the place look bigger.

Booth seating has been added to allow more people to dine in on a busy night and to smarten things up, artificial hedge & plants are hanging down on the wall and made it look cuter!

Booth seating

I love how they have kept the Main feature which is the wood fired stone baked pizza oven shown below.

Alhamdulillah, Salt and Crust have also improved the prayer room its still in the same room upstairs and will fit one person at a time.

The Food

As mentioned before, the menu is still the same at the moment and changes will be made gradually. They still do woodfired pizzas, steaks, sizzlers, pasta, burgers etc, which we’re pretty chuffed about as we do enjoy their food. They have changed the graphic design of the menu and from what I have gathered, they have added sweet potato fries as a new option. Who doesn’t love sweet potato fries?! I wish I tried them but I completely forgot to order, but oh well will definitely try them next time!

So to start things off we just HAD to get the potato skins as its one of my favourite starters from here.

Potato Skins – Yummy!

Potato Skins (£3.95) – Potato skins with a selection of sour cream and chive, chicken tikka topped with cheese and finally red onions topped with cheese. The amount of cheese on the potato skins was just right. I loved the chicken tikka, it was soft and tender and packed with just the right amount of masala spice.

Garlic Bread with Cheese

Garlic Bread with Cheese (£4.95) – If you have dined here before, you know how delicious the garlic bread is. We love that they serve it in a pizza style & we truly can’t fault anything about how it tastes. We asked them to add chillies to which gave a nice heat to the tongue, but not too spicy, the cheese was just right and you could tell it was of good quality.

Spaghetti Al Pollo Pomodoro

Spaghetti Al Pollo Pomodoro (£8.95) – Pomodoro sauce and tender chicken wrapped in soft spaghetti, infused with the flavour of garlic, paprika and soft onions with a garnish of a fresh Parsley. The flavour combination of the Pomodoro sauce was perfect. The warmth of the chilli comes through but only slightly, not too much. The only thing I will say is that I would have preferred more spaghetti because it was swimming in the Pomodoro sauce. If the ratio of spaghetti and sauce was right, then this dish would have tasted even more delicious.

Lamb Donner

Lamb Donner (£6.95) – Long pieces of fresh Lamb Donner served with Piri Piri Rice and warm Nan Bread. Often enough, when you try donner in a restaurant or takeaway, the donner contains mostly fat, with a mixture of the low quality lamb which is something you definitely don’t want to put in your mouth. This lamb donner is none of that dirty stuff, this is authentic donner with a high meat content which is evident from the flavout. It tasted clean and juicy and it was amazing!

Koobideh

Koobideh (£8.95) – A generous helping of Minced Lamb skewers, accompanied with chunky chips, freshly chopped salad and warm pitta bread. My family devoured this dish to the point where there was nothing left! However, I personally wasn’t too keen on this, but that’s just my personal preference.

Greek Salad

Greek Salad (£3.45) –  Freshly chopped Vine tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, red onions and black olives, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with chilli flakes with feta cheese sat on the top with a fresh sprig of basil. The salad here is always exceptional, its fresh and the flavour of the balsamic and olive oil brings it all together. Amazing vibrant colours might Iadd!

Calzone

Salt & Crust Calzone (£10.95) –  A folded style pizza containing soft rosemary potatoes, peppers, chef’s special sauce, sweet corn, red onions, chicken tikka, lamb donner, topped with spring onions and herbs. Finally melted with Mozzarella cheese. I always order this and we absolutely loved it, was definitely the star of the dish for me. The flavour combinations go together so well with and the dough has a balanced texture of soft on the outside and a crispy outside.

The Drinks

If you have followed me for a while, then you would know that I love mocktails and to find a good mocktail in restaurants required to your taste is quite difficult.

the mocktails served here have always exceeded expectations. They look delicious and tastes sooo good!

Salt & Crust Special Jar

Salt & Crust Special – (£4.45) for a glass or for small jug its priced at (£5.45)  This drink combined flavours of mint, lime and syrup, served in a mason jar with a slice of lime fixed on the top of the jar and a cute little Umbrella. I really enjoyed this drink because it was not syrupy and sickly sweet which usually is a disappointment in other places. They always manage to keep the balance of the citrusy bitter lime and syrup just right so its a nice refreshing drink.

Raspberry Mojito (on the right)

Raspberry Mojito (£4.45) – Fresh raspberries, combined with mint and zesty lime in a special syrup, crushed with ice. This was nicely tart and not excessively sweet and sour which is what we usually experience elsewhere. I love how the strong bitterness of the lime disappears in the drink and carries a nice hint of citrus flavour, not overpowering the rest of the flavours.

The Verdict

All in all, I must say that we were pretty impressed by the portion sizes of the dishes, a lot bigger than before which is good value for money even though the prices are slightly on the high but not too much for a restaurant. It is generally reasonably priced and i’m happy that the portions are generous. I liked the vibrant colours of the decor as it created a good atmosphere and this was a much needed renovation. The service from the staff STILL needs improving though, our first waiter was impolite & rude in the manner in which he spoke to us. However, another member of management deeply apologised after we informed him of how we were spoken to so, in the end, we were happy and had a nice time. InShaaAllah within time, they have will a chance to flourish in their service because that is vital when dining anywhere. Let me know if you guys visit Salt & Crust. Would love to know your thoughts!
